Clean up and Repair Scanned and PDF Files

REpair, an add-on module to pageREnew and pdfREnew, has the best image clean up tools on the market today. It can quickly enhance even extremely large images and reduce the need to rescan. The menu at the right shows the commands. You can choose to clean up a selected page within a file or use the batch option for cleaning up an entire scanned file or folder.

Two REpair formats are available: REpair for Office($300) supports file sizes up to 11" x 17" and REpair for Engineering($600) supports all file format sizes. Both contain all of the functionality described below.


Deskew

Deskew to Text

straightens the image using detected text as the basis for alignment. This tool is designed to work with scanned office documentation to correct for document alignment issues and eliminate rescans.

Deskew to a Line

straightens the image using the longest detected vertical line and snapping it to a straight vertical line. This tool is designed to work with engineering drawings to correct for document alignment issues and eliminate rescans.



Despeckle

You can specify the size of the pixels that you would like identified as extra "speckles". It is a good idea to despeckle before you crop the image so REpair will not think that extra pixels are actually part of the image.


Borders and Cropping

Borders

are often created by blank space around a document during the scanning process. Borders can create inaccurate deskew results and interfere with OCR. REpair detects and removes these borders.

Crop

removes excess space around a scanned image. REpair locates the pixels in the upper left corner of the scan and resizes the image using a margin you specify.

Smooth, Repair and Remove Lines

Remove grid lines

is sometimes needed to prepare the document for OCR operations. Define line parameters such length, curve, horizontal, vertical or both. The lines are removed and any intersecting characters are repaired.

smoothes and repairs all lines that meet settings you specify.



Character Enhancement

Smooth and Lighten Characters

and

Smooth and Darken Characters

smoothes the edging of text by removing or adding pixels. It also removes unnecessary pixel spurs. This improves OCR (Optical Character Recognition) accuracy, improves legibility, and reduces storage needs.



Batch Processing of Repair Functions

Batch repair operations allow multiple files or multiple pages within one file to be repaired or enhanced at once. When not using the Batch Repair function, repair changes are made only to the selected page of an open file.
